The Ropy Thing: What the heck does it mean?

The Ropy Thing. A confusing, less than scary story about a giant black... well ropy thing that kills everybody except Suzie and Jerry until he is forced to admit that he no longer loves her and it kills him... Harsh. But there's got to be a bigger metaphor going on here. And it was when Suzie first said this that it made me think. "'Maybe you did it because you love me'". Throughout the entirety of the story, I was extremely confused as to what the ropy thing may have represented. The best I can think of is that it is one giant metaphor for Jerry's love for Suzie. In the beginning, it's "crazy" and eats up everything in its path. It's all-consuming. But as time goes on, there because less to eat and all that's left is Jerry and Suzie, with Jerry having to admit that he doesn't love Suzie anymore. And if the ropy thing hadn't eaten him alive, his feelings might have. Eh?
Look it may not be the best explanation but it kinda makes sense.
See ya' in the next one!
